(UNDATED) - Indiana University’s School of Medicine is lobbying for money to expand its residency programs.

With 1,200 students, IU's med school is second only to the University of Illinois. It wants to add 14 students a year to meet an expected shortage of doctors down the road. To do that, the school needs funding to open up more room for clinical training.

The School of Medicine is based at IUPUI. Assistant Dean Peter Duong says its Indianapolis clinical sites are "maxed out." The university has regional education centers at five IU and Purdue campuses, plus Ball State, Notre Dame, Indiana State and the University of Southern Indiana. IU wants $5 million to those centers and launch a new one near IU-East in Richmond or IU-Southeast in New Albany.

Duong says beefing up the regional centers would lead to better care for underserved rural areas.
