Marion Schools Could Be Taken Over By State

(MARION) - Marion Community Schools board members want to remain in control of the school system’s budget, but if the actions they are taking now aren’t effective enough, the state could take charge of the district’s finances.

Financial issues have plagued the school system this year, with teacher cuts and possible building closures announced to cut costs.

While Indiana has a provision that school systems can be placed under state control for financial reasons, Marion Community Schools may be saved from that fate. The portion of the Indiana code that calls for schools to be controlled will be repealed January 1, 2009 according to the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance.
