IUPUI Offers Motorsports Engineering Degree

Last updated on Wednesday, May 14, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS) - IUPUI is the first university in the country to offer a bachelor’s degree in motorsports engineering.

IUPUI Motorsports Director Pete Hylton says the degree program gives motorsports specific attention, the same as the aerospace or manufacturing industries.

Hylton says IUPUI has been building a strong motorsports program for three years, resulting in state approval of a four-year degree in motorsports engineering. Hylton says at the suggestion of the university's racing industry partners, two courses will focus on the business side of motorsports.

Since the Indiana Commission For Higher Education approved the motorsports degree program last Friday, several current IUPUI engineering students plan to transfer into it this fall.

IUPUI already has 30 students enrolled in their motorsports technology certificate program. It will co-exist with the degree program as a minor course of study.

Rollie Helmling is the Director of Motorsports for the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. He calls IUPUI's new motorsports engineering degree program a milestone for education and for motorsports.

Helmling says there are over 1,400 motorsports businesses in the state, employing over 12,000 people. He says those are high income, high-tech jobs that are helping to grow Indiana's economy.
