Daniels Wants More Hoosiers To Get Tuition Help
(UNDATED)- Every Hoosier will be guaranteed enough money for two years of college, if the state can settle on a way to pay for it.
Indiana's 21st Century Scholars Program already ensures low-income Hoosiers can afford college.
Governor Daniels says there needs to be something to help middle-income families keep up with the rising college costs too. The governor is proposing a guarantee of about $6,000 to attend a state school for two years.
Daniels promises he'll propose a way to pay for it before the November election. He says one possibility is a revival of his call to privatize the Hoosier Lottery.
He's also looking at whether other state programs could be trimmed or eliminated. And he challenged members of a commission for higher education audience, including five of Indiana's college presidents, to offer their own ideas for affordability.
Daniels praised one of those presidents, Ivy Tech's Tom Snyder, for pledging to hold tuition increases to no more than the rate of inflation.
