(WEST LAFAYETTE) - A Purdue-designed interactive map of carbon dioxide emissions finds C02 hotspots aren’t where we thought they were.

Purdue's "Vulcan" software offers 100 times more detail than previous maps, and reveals there are more emissions in the southeast and less in the northeast than previously thought. The difference comes to about three years' worth of emissions.

Purdue researchers say having more precise local data will enable policymakers to target efforts to combat global warming at the areas where emissions are worst, rather than adopting a single standard for entire states.
