Nursing Shortage Getting Worse, Says Nursing School Dean

(UNDATED) - The country’s nurse shortage is now eight years old and likely getting worse.

IU Nursing School Dean Dr. Marion Broome says the shortage is due to many factors, but two in particular. Broome says the expansion of the health care system, meaning more hospitals, and the aging population of the public and nurses have led to the shortage.

But Broome says more nursing students are not the solution since those have increased 20 percent in the last eight years. She says hospitals not expanding their faculties and low salaries are the reasons the shortage will get worse before its gets better.

But she does add the health care community is working together better to find ways to combat the problem.
