(INDIANAPOLIS) - An 11th-grade Perry Township English teacher has been suspended for using a book that wasn’t approved by administrators.
School officials say teacher Connie Heermann disobeyed an order from her supervisors not to teach the book, which contains racial slurs and some sexual content and explicit language. They're now trying to fire her for insubordination.
The book contains diary entries by students and inspired the movie "Freedom writers." Actress Hillary Swank portrays a teacher of inner city kids.
