(WEST LAFAYETTE) - Purdue is contracting with a Virginia-based firm to provide emergency text message alerts to students, faculty and staff.

The contract with 2sms Business Text Messaging runs for six months, but university administrators hope to have a long-term deal by the end of the spring semester.

The six-month agreement will cover two emergency text messages to those who have signed up. If more messages are needed or more people sign up, it would be at an additional cost to the school.

Purdue also uses the internet, e-mails, sirens and phone calls to issue emergency alerts.
