IU Studies First Gulf War And Healthcare

(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indiana University study finds veterans of the first Gulf War didn’t go to the hospital any more often than soldiers who stayed home… but they were one-fourth more likely to go to the emergency room.

Bradley Doebbeling with the Regenstrief Institute says either Gulf War vets were more injury-prone, or had less access to outpatient services. Either way, he says the study suggests congress should review how the VA can provide care more effectively.

The study looked at troops from Iowa and how often they sought medical care five years after the 1991 war.
