(UNDATED) - The latest ISTEP+ scores are in and Indiana Department of Education officials are calling the results a step in the right direction.

Nearly 72 percent of students in grades 3-10 passed the English portion of the test, while about 74 percent passed the math part. Those results are up slightly from 2006, when about 70 percent passed English and 72 percent passed math.

The biggest gains were in grades 7-9.

State schools' Superintendent Dr. Suellen Reed says a new computer tutoring system is helping both students and teachers be better prepared for the test.

Reed sited an Indianapolis middle school as a model for progress. Emma Donnan Middle School has many students living in poverty, but made great strides on its ISTEP+ scores.

Starting in 2009, the ISTEP+ test moves to the spring.
