(SOUTH BEND) - A University of Notre Dame astrophysicist thinks he’s figured out the so-called “star in the East”’ that led the wise men to travel to Bethlehem 2,000 years ago.

Two years of research have led Grant Mathews to conclude that the heavenly sign around the time of the birth of Jesus Christ was likely an unusual alignment of planets, the sun and the moon.

Astronomers, theologians and historians have been trying for centuries to determine exactly which star might have inspired the reference in the gospel of Matthew.

By tapping into NASA databases, Matthews has come up with the theory that the star of Bethlehem actually was the sun, the moon, Jupiter and Saturn aligned in the constellation Aries at a time when Venus and Mars were visible in neighboring constellations.
