University Police Examine Policies To Prevent School Shootings
(WEST LAFAYETTE) - Purdue’s police chief says campus police departments across the country continue to examine and strengthen their emergency management policies in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings earlier this year.
Chief Gary Evans says campus police departments across the country have been working on better mental-health threat assessment and more comprehensive emergency notification systems. Evans says a good relationship between the department and university administration is key.
He says at Purdue, police and administrators have a paging system in place to get the word out about emergencies. Evans says they also regularly share information about potential threats.
Evans made the comments during a panel discussion at the Indiana Student Affairs Association Conference on the Purdue campus. The police chiefs from Ball State and IUPUI also participated.
