(GARY) - A blue-ribbon commission on local government meets in Fort Wayne tonight, after its first meeting brought a string of complaints about school spending, inflated property assessments, and overall government waste.

The panel chaired by former governor Joe Kernan and Chief Justice Randall Shepard heard from about 200 people at Indiana University-Northwest last night.

Several people voiced objections to school budgets that push tax bills up or assessors who turn a deaf ear to arguments their homes have been valued too high.

And officials from Lake County's seven local library systems turned out to warn against folding them into a single county library system.

After tonight, there are additional hearings next week in New Albany and Franklin.
