(TERRE HAUTE) - Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology students are now aiming their sights toward the sky after funds helped to pay for a new observatory in Australia.

Students and faculty are able to operate the telescope from their classroom through an internet connection.

Students, faculty and alumni downloaded several images from the Australia-based observatory in campus exhibits during Rose-Hulman's homecoming celebration and a recent educational demonstration. There may be opportunities in the future for the public to use the telescope through outreach programs.

The Oakley Foundation has provided more than 641-thousand dollars to Rose-Hulman since 1999 to expand the college's astronomy program.
