State Law Mandates Financial Goals For Schools

(FERDINAND) - A state law passed this year requires each school corporation within the state to adopt a set of financial goals.
Southeast Dubois County School Superintendent Bob Johnson says the goals are simple enough: reduce spending on overhead and increase spending on instruction. The school board adopted those goals at a recent meeting.
However, faced with a period of declining enrollment, Johnson says that some of the goals will be difficult to achieve. Other goals seek to reduce expenses for overhead -- expenses Johnson says are sometimes difficult to change.
Johnson says he is unsure why the general assembly wants the goals, but he suggests schools could be headed for another series of consolidations.
