(UNDATED) - Indiana educators say schools need to take the lead in prodding students to take their civic responsibilities seriously.

Congress has asked all 50 states to take a look at how to promote civic education. State Board of Education member Todd Huston told a daylong conference in Indianapolis it may not be realistic to tell kids to vote for its own sake.

Huston says kids need an issue that's personal to them, the way property tax bills have gotten their parents more interested.

Plainfield High School government teacher Chris Cavanaugh says adults need to set an example. When they don't carry out what they're asking kids to do, Cavanaugh says kids sense that and tune out.
