Reading And Math Scores Improve Across Indiana

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana’s 4th and 8th graders outscored the national average in reading and math on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the nation’s report card.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Suellen Reed says the results are from a random sample of over 26-hundred 8th graders and 31-hundred 4th graders in 110 Indiana schools were used in the test.
While gains were good in math, Reed says reading scores need to improve more. In grade 4, Indiana ranks 30th in the nation, up from 32nd two years ago.
Reed says as full-day kindergarten is phased in, efforts are being made to spot any reading problems children may have.
