Indiana State Museum Acquires Rare Mastodon Skeleton

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana State Museum has announced the acquisition of one of the most complete mastodon skeletons found.
The skeleton, known as the Bueschling mastodon, was found near Fort Wayne in 1998 is a typical example of the elephant-like mammal that roamed the Midwest during the ice age.
Dr. Daniel Fisher of the University of Michigan, who studied the tusks of the animal, said it was probably 33-yeard-old when it died more than 11,000 years ago, stood about 9 feet tall and weighed around 6,000 pounds.
