The skeleton, known as the Bueschling mastodon, was found near Fort Wayne in 1998 is a typical example of the elephant-like mammal that roamed the Midwest during the ice age.

Dr. Daniel Fisher of the University of Michigan, who studied the tusks of the animal, said it was probably 33-yeard-old when it died more than 11,000 years ago, stood about 9 feet tall and weighed around 6,000 pounds.
