Gary Bus Drivers Get Pink Slip

Last updated on Monday, August 6, 2007

(GARY) - Laidlaw Educational Services says it is laying off 250 bus drivers and 20 administrative staff in Gary.

The company says it was not successful in renewing its bid to serve the Gary Community School Corporation.

The company says the drivers, who would have started work in Gary on August 22nd, will not be called back to work. The drivers are represented by Service Employees International Union Local 73.

Laidlaw says some administrative staff will be let go August 31, while others will be terminated on or before September 30th.

Laidlaw says that since it was not notified by the Gary school board that it had lost its bid for the contract until July 24th, it was not able to provide a 60 day notice of the mass layoff as required under the worker adjustment and retraining act.
