(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University has picked the head of its honors college as IU’s first-ever provost, bringing an end to a stormy four-year search.

Philosophy Professor Karen Hanson becomes IU's Chief Academic Officer, with all deans reporting to her.

IU has had a string of interim administrators since Chancellor Sharon Brehm resigned in November 2003. After a two-year wait, then-president Adam Herbert rejected all the candidates to replace her--that helped trigger a faculty revolt that led to Herbert's early retirement.

He coupled that announcement with the elimination of the chancellor post, and the creation of the provost's job instead.

New president Michael McRobbie had served as interim provost while IU went through a second search.
