Last updated on Sunday, June 10, 2007

(BLOOMINGTON) - A champion for diversity initiatives is leaving Indiana University.

Vice President Charlie Nelms was named chancellor of North Carolina Central. That's a historically black university in Durham.

The 60-year-old who ran the school's institutional development and student affairs, was well known as an outspoken supporter for minority and low income students.

His last day on the job at IU is July 1.
