Kids Do Better In School With Life Goals, Study Says

(UNDATED) - A Stanford study says a key ingredient in helping kids do better in school is giving them a reason to want to.

Researchers found students who got intensive tutoring in math improved their scores. But they improved even more when the teachers told them if they worked hard, they'd get smarter.

Indiana Youth Institute President Bill Stanczykiewicz says schools see the converse of that principle with the kids who drop out. Surveys show 80% of those students said they left school because they didn't see any relevance to their lives.

Stanczykiewicz says motivation doesn't have to be as direct as telling students "if you study, you'll succeed."

He says holding tutoring sessions at the tutor's workplace can give students a glimpse of what they can achieve by applying themselves.
