(UNDATED) - A national study puts Indiana’s graduation rate a hair above the national average, but still closer to the bottom than the top.

Indiana's 71-percent graduation rate ranks 29th in the nation, but 17 percentage points better than last-place South Carolina. Utah ranks first with an 84-percent graduation rate.

The editorial projects in education research center numbers are from 2004. Indiana says its numbers rose to 77-percent last year, the first year the state used a new, more accurate graduation formula.

EPE Director Christopher Swanson says the study confirms a direct link between how far you go in school and the salary you earn.

It's less clear what mix of skills best prepares you for both college and a career.
