(INDIANAPOLIS) - High school students from across Indiana are applying what they have learned in math and science by attempting to get the most mileage out of a car.

It's the 12th year for the event held by Indiana Mathematic Science Technology Education Alliance.

Assistant Director Greg Steele says the group promotes the three in high schools. This event allows students to lean the practical aspects of proposing an idea, designing a fuel efficient car and building it. Then they compete to see who can come up with the best mileage at O'Reilly raceway park west of Indianapolis.

Mileage has been over 15 hundred miles to the gallon. Teacher Dan Ritter of Mater Dei High School in Evansville says the hands on experience gives some students confidence in their abilities to trouble shoot and work on complex. Students also learn how to plan and organize.
