(BEDFORD) - A special ceremony was held at the North Lawrence Community Schools Administration Building Thursday night to honor retiring teachers.

About 19 teachers were given special recognition for their years of service.

Assistant Superintendent Gary Conner said that the number of years the teachers had taught totaled 627½ years.

Teacher Bill Tatom had the longest tenure with 39 years. He said that he didn't want to teach so long that a student would come up to him and say he taught his grandparents.

Darla Smith, who passed away last year, received her honor posthumously by her husband David Smith. She had worked for the school corporation for 32 years.
