Parents Plead To Keep Charter Schools Open
(UNDATED) - Board members and parents from Indiana’s two planned online charter schools are pleading with the legislature not to pull the plug on funding.
The Indiana Connections Academy and Indiana Virtual Charter School are scheduled to open this fall, and the Senate has included startup funding in its version of the budget.
But House Democrats excluded funding for the two schools in their budget, saying schools which don't actually exist shouldn't jump the line for funding ahead of bricks-and-mortar schools.
Members of The Indiana Black Legislative Caucus have dropped hints they might force a special session if the two charters receive funding.
About 30 parents and children gathered at the Statehouse to deliver a letter to budget negotiators urging them to let the schools open.
