Local Professor Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize
(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indiana University professor has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Doctor Joe Mamlin was chief of the general medicine division at I.U. School of Medicine.
The 71-year-old now spends eleven months a year in Kenya. In 2000 he started a program called "The Academic Model for Prevention and Treatment of HIV-Aids" and has helped 43,000 people in Kenya. The program's 900 employees includes a handful of Americans. Their 19 clinics offer education on HIV and Aids, medicine and follow-up help.
Mamlin's program drew the attention of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which contributed one million dollars. The Nobel Selection Committee will announce a winner in October.
