IPS Schools See Improvement

(UNDATED) - A new report on test results for some of the nation’s biggest urban school districts shows elementary and middle schoolers in the Indianapolis Public Schools outpace the rest of the state in terms of academic improvement.

The survey was conducted by the council of the great city schools and looks at test scores for Indiana children in grades three through ten. The study shows improvement in IPS reading and math scores almost across the board in third through eighth grades but sees a decreasing percentage of high school students passing the exams in both categories.

Council Executive Director Michael Casserly says many urban areas have seen improvements, but acknowledges there's substantial room for improvement. For instance, less than a third of IPS 10th graders passed reading or math tests in 2006--and significantly fewer passed the tests than just two years prior.

However, IPS gets high marks for its treatment of students for whom English is a second language. English language learners in the Circle City have shown gains in math and reading scores in three of four categories.

For the state as a whole, three of four show no gain or a drop in scores.
