(INDIANAPOLIS) - Four Indianapolis elementary schools have received $25,000 dollar grants from VH1, in the eighth round of grants to IPS through the cable channel’s “Save The Music” program.

In 2000, just one in six IPS grade schools had a music program. The latest grants from VH1 and local partner Brighthouse networks bring the total to six in ten.

Broad Ripple High School Band Director Kelly Hershey says that means more students signing up in the higher grades. "When you have these brand new, fresh instruments, the kids think it's really cool," Hershey says.

Two schools joined Broad Ripple's band and orchestra for a brief performance at the statehouse. In May, all 36 VH1 schools will join forces for a full concert.
