RIAA May Pull Purdue Internet Logs
(WEST LAFAYETTE) - Purdue is telling some university internet users they could soon face legal action for illegally downloading and sharing music.
The school this week will begin sending notices to alleged violators, saying they can pay a settlement fee to avoid prosecution.
Purdue spokesperson Jeanne Norberg says the university is not passing judgment, but simply acting as the middle man for the Recording Industry Association of America.
If alleged music pirates decide not to settle, the RIAA could ask Purdue for its logs for the purpose of pursuing legal action.
Norberg says it takes Purdue staffers about 6 hours to identify each potential violators on the school's network--a process she says is both time consuming and costly for the university.
