Purdue Students Help Rebuild New Orleans Homes

Last updated on Friday, March 16, 2007

(WEST LAFAYETTE) - About 60 Purdue students are hoping their volunteer work will help victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Purdue junior Dan Burch says the group decided to spend their spring break partnering with "Habitat For Humanity" to help families rebuild their ravaged homes. The students are spread among four different work sites in the ninth ward, painting, building, and performing demolition work.

Hurricane Katrina victim Sharon Cheneau is one of the homeowners being helped by the group. She says the number of volunteers has steadily decreased about a year-and-a-half after the storm, even though the need for them still exists.

Cheneau says she feels "blessed" to have received help from the students. The Purdue group plans to return to Indiana this weekend.
