Delta Zeta Kicked Off Of Depauw's Campus

(GREENCASTLE) - Depauw University in Greencastle has severed ties with a national sorority, following a controversial decision to ask the majority of the membership to leave.

University President Dr. Robert Bottoms released a statement, saying the Delta Zeta Chapter would be closed, as of this fall. Four of the six remaining members are seniors and are graduating. 23 girls were asked to leave and have said it was because they weren't "pretty" enough. 6 more quit, out of protest.

Delta Zeta officials say those members weren't fully committed to active recruitment. Bottoms called the decision to reject these girls during finals "disruptive" and said that the school and Delta Zeta's national office have two different takes on what took place.

Bottoms also says it appears this had nothing to do with race. A statement on DZ's website apologizes for the events and says, "it was never our intention to disparage or hurt any of our members during the chapter re-organization process."

Bottoms disputes claims that Delta Zeta officials have said they want to work with the university. He says the only contact he has had with them was an email, asking for the name of Depauw's legal council.
