Purdue President Urging Stop To Hunger Strike
(WEST LAFAYETTE) - Purdue president Martin Jischke is urging a handful of students to give up their hunger strike.
Some have gone 20 days without food in an effort to pressure the university into signing on to a program they say would help ensure Purdue apparel is not made in sweatshops. In a statement released after a meeting with four of the students, Jischke calls on them to "end this tactic in the interests of their own health."
He says the issues are complex and there remains disagreement on how to best approach the problem. A university committee is recommending Purdue not sign the "designated suppliers program." Jischke says he will make a final decision in the next few days.
