International Walk to School Day

Last updated on Wednesday, October 4, 2006

(UNDATED) - Today is International Walk to School Day and the Indiana Department of Transportation is asking parents and children to put away the car keys and lace up their walking shoes.

International Walk to School Day was created to promote the importance of increasing physical activity, reducing traffic congestion, and building a stronger sense of community.

INDOT spokeswoman Megan Kaderavek says as much as 25% of morning traffic is school-related. She says students are less likely to walk and bike to school because parents are worried about their safety. Several Indiana communities have created supervised "walking school buses" to keep kids from getting hurt.

INDOT plans to award more than two-point-five million dollars to state school districts to fund safe routes to school programs.
