(UNDATED) - Indiana college and university security officials are gearing up for an increase in crime as students head back to campus.
Most state college security directors say theft is the most frequent crime committed on college property.
Although violent crime is much less frequent, Indiana University Police Captain Jerry Minger says alcohol and drug use can lead to sexual assaults and vandalism.
Manchester College Security Director Les Gahl believes the open atmosphere of dorm life makes reports of stolen laptops and other expensive electronic equipment more likely.
Most state colleges and universities now have crime prevention tips and emergency contact information posted on their websites.
Security officers say the most important advice is to always be aware of your surroundings.
