(UNDATED) - It’s unclear if Alcoa’s plans to cut more than 1,200 jobs globally this year will have a major impact on workers in Indiana.
The aluminum giant says about 13,500 employees will lose their jobs, but it's declining to say where those layoffs will take place.
The jobs cuts may have little immediate effect on operations in Lafayette -- which employs about 800 people. A local united steelworkers union president representing some of those workers says he has been told the aluminum maker isn't planning any layoffs there.
The plan also calls for a freeze in salaries and hiring with a 50 percent reduction in capital expenditures.
Company officials says some cuts are necessary to conserve cash, reduce costs and be more competitive in the current economy.
Alcoa also has plants in Indianapolis, Newburgh, Auburn and Laporte.
