(UNDATED) - Economists have warned businesses could go bankrupt if the government doesn’t find a way to relieve a tightening credit crunch. The state has honored 87 Hoosier businesses who have seen it all before.

Governor Daniels and Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman presided over the annual statehouse ceremony recognizing businesses in operation for a half-century or more.

Aurora insurance company Booher and Taylor led the way, with 148 years in operation.

Companies have different explanations for how they've weathered past economic downturns. Francesville Drain Tile CEO Chris Overmyer says his 85-year-old company's business is divided between agricultural and construction clients, and when one of those industries is down, the other tends to be up.

Mike Nardine with Vincennes Progress Laundry and Dry Cleaning says his 76-year-old company is struggling like many others with high utility costs. He says the company has cut staff and passed some costs along to customers to cope with soaring operating expenses.
