(UNDATED) - Indiana is suing the nation’s largest mortgage lender.

Attorney General Steve Carter says his office filed a lawsuit against Countrywide Home Loans and its parent company, Countrywide Financial. He alleges deceptive and misleading practices, resulting in borrowers who obtained loans which many could not afford to pay back.

Carter says the lawsuit seeks several actions, but overall wants countrywide to end the deceptive practices alleged in court documents. The lawsuit also asks for penalties against the company equal to $15,500 per violation.

Carter wants Countrywide customers to carefully review their mortgage contracts to make sure it reflects what they were told.

Those who feel their signed contract is not what they the lender told them should file a complaint online at indianaconsumer.com.
