Pollution Permit Causing Headache For Amish Businesses
(FORT WAYNE) - What started out as a helpful educational program has turned into a dispute between the state’s environmental agency and some small Amish businesses in Northeast Indiana.
Part of the problem stems from the agency's requirement for 7-day a week monitoring to determine the need for air pollution control permits for a business. But the Amish don't work on Sundays.
Governor Mitch Daniels has told officials at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to use common sense in resolving the issue.
The two sides are now in a cooling-off period while they try to figure out how to move forward.
