(MUNCIE) - The nation’s largest yellow perch farm is operating near Muncie.
Bell Aquaculture says the farm in Albany will eventually produce more than 9 million pounds of fish a year.
The company will have 70 workers.
The fish is expected to be ready for restaurant purchase by Spring 2009. Bell Aquaculture's Bell Perch product is expected to be available for restaurant purchase in spring 2009 and consumer purchase in the future.
Company officials say yellow perch is usually only available a few months out of the year.
Overfishing, loss of habitat, pollution, and competition from invasive non-native species have reduced the commercial catch to less than 20%of its historic highs--an 80% reduction.
