(FISHERS) - About 120 Sallie Mae employees at the Fishers Loan Center are without jobs.

Sallie Mae Spokesman Tom Joyce confirms that the nation's largest provider of student loans is laying off about four percent of its Hoosier workforce. Joyce blames the cuts on tightened credit markets and legislative cuts to the student lending program. The cuts include both management and non-management jobs.

Former employees are receiving severance pay, health care continuation and placement assistance.

The cuts also affect 230 employees in other states.
