(WHITING) - The Times of Munster reports that a five-month investigation of BP’s Whiting refinery found untested fire hoses, broken equipment and outdated safety procedures.
State officials say the violations, while significant, largely pale in comparison to the problems uncovered at BP's Texas City refinery. A March 2005 explosion there killed 15 people and injured more than 170 others.
The Whiting investigation followed that explosion. The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration finished its lengthy review of the whiting refinery last year and leveled $384,250 in fines.
The Times recently obtained state inspection records detailing the hazards cited at the refinery.
