Indiana Wineries Work To Promote Tourism

Last updated on Monday, October 1, 2007

(UNDATED) - A recent “USA Today” poll ranked California as the top wine destinations in the us. The 35 wineries in Indiana are now stepping up promotional efforts to make the Hoosier state a wine destination as well.

Jeanette Merritt with the Indiana Wine and Grape Council says it seems to be working. "They're getting customers from Illinois and Wisconsin and Ohio and Pennsylvania and Michigan," says Merritt.

Dr. Charles Thomas is the owner of Chateau Thomas Winery in Plainfield. He says wineries are teaming up to bring more tourists to the state. "Wine trails are several different wineries that are somewhat regionally associated and they have various activities," says Thomas.

Dr. Thomas says while the Indiana wineries have plenty to offer, they face some challenges. He says Indiana doesn't offer the same scenic geography like California or New York.
