Despite Union Deal, Indy GM Plant In Jeopardy
(INDIANAPOLIS) - Just days after a new agreement was hammered out between GM and the United Auto Workers, several hundred people at an Indy GM plant are learning the plant’s future is in doubt.
The metal fabrication plant on Indianapolis' near south side could close by the end of 2011, if the auto maker can't find a buyer.
Union official Kenneth Walton says the plant also has the opportunity to stay open. Walton says workers at the plant are a family and they are willing to do whatever it takes to stay open.
Last week, UAW workers were on strike for two days. GM and the union reached a deal that includes the union taking charge of retirement plans for workers, including pensions and health insurance.
Some workers say, even if the plant stays open, more jobs are being outsourced to other countries that offer cheap labor.
