(CARMEL) - The Citizens Action Coalition is protesting Duke Energy’s proposed coal gasification plant in Knox County.

Protesters gathered in Carmel Wednesday to suggest Duke focus on making homes and businesses more efficient instead. Opponents complain the plant is expected to cost billions of dollars and could lead to rate hikes of 15-percent or more.

CAC spokesman Dave Menzer suggests making more use of wind power instead. Duke spokeswoman Angeline Protegere says wind power isn't enough, since it's only available when the wind blows.

Proteger says the proposed plant could be one of the cleanest coal-burning plants in the world, and says it's needed to meet future power demand.
