(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Kroger Corporation is coming to the rescue of The Julian Center—a domestic violence shelter in Indianapolis for women and children.

Kroger has pledged 30 thousand dollars this year and another 30 thousand next year as part of a matching campaign. The company is urging other corporations to step up and help.

The problem for The Julian Center is one of increasing need. Director Ann Delaney says last year, the center operated at 38 percent over capacity and it's on target to be over capacity this year as well. Currently 117 people are living at the facility, including 62 children. She says this results in greater expenses for food, counseling, and schooling for kids in addition to the need for more beds.

Delany says she doesn't think there are necessarily more battered women and children in the community--she believes the center is more visible and the community is doing a better job of educating people about the early signs of violence.

She points out that as the need for domestic violence shelters has increased, the number of domestic violence murders in the city has gone down.
