(WHITING) - An environmental group is asking Indiana authorities to reopen the open appeal process for a permit allowing a Whiting refinery to increase discharges into Lake Michigan.

BP officials say the new permit, along with a 3.8 billion dollar expansion of the refinery, will allow the company to make an extra 620 million gallons of gas using Canadian crude oil.

But opponents claim that process would release 54 percent more ammonia and 35 percent more suspended solids into Lake Michigan.

The Chicago-based Alliance For The Great Lakes recently filed a petition with state environmental officials, claiming they were purposely kept in the dark to limit appeals and public outcry.
