Cleanup Begins At Richmond Theatre

Last updated on Friday, August 17, 2007

(RICHMOND) - Professional cleaning teams will come into the Murray Theatre in Downtown Richmond early next week to remove the smoky mess left behind when electrical lines suddenly caught fire Tuesday afternoon.

The blaze caused about 75,000-dollars in damage, mostly to electric feed lines and to a utility room at the rear of the more than 100-year-old building used by the Richmond Civic Theatre.

Three people were inside the theater when the fire broke out, but they escaped without injury.

Richmond Civic Theatre Board President Peter Zalesky says several businesses are offering office and rehearsal space while the clean up is underway.

Zalesky is confident that the Richmond Civic Theatre will be cleaned and repaired and ready for performances of "West Side Story" early next month.

A cause of the fire has not been determined.
