Spencer County To Build An Ehtanol Production Facility

Last updated on Thursday, March 22, 2007

(ROCKPORT) - Officials from Biofuels International have announced they have acquired an option on a site in Spencer County to locate a $180-million dollar ethanol production facility.

Walter Siekman, the CEO of the Pittsburgh company's parent organization, says his company has experience with the local workforce and cites that experience as the primary reason the plant will be located in Southern Indiana.

Sieckman says the proximity to multiple transportation options was an added benefit. The plant is expected to produce 100-million gallons of ethanol each year. If needed, production can be expanded to 200-million gallons.

A groundbreaking is planned this summer and production would begin in about 24 months. Lincolnland Economic Development Corporation Director Tom Utter says the company was recruited in response to the county's strategic development plan, which calls for developing agribusinesses.

Siekman says the plant will employ around 50 people. He says Biofuels International is currently negotiating with local contractors for those construction services.
