(UNDATED) - The Indiana Department of Insurance is investigating an Illinois-based company for charging customers about sixty dollars for a service that normally costs only six.

Department spokesperson Paul Ogden says National Deed Services, Inc. is mailing letters from Washington D.C. to Hoosier homeowners offering to obtain a certified copy of the homeowner's deed for $59 dollars to $50 dollars.

But Ogden says that same item can be purchased at county courthouses for a total of six dollars. Indiana Insurance Commissioner James Atterholt is asking the newly-created title insurance division to determine if the mailings are legal.
